LIVING ROOMS / GREAT ROOMS
Many homes are moving away from formal living rooms and focusing more on great rooms… either way both rooms should feel open, light and inviting. Act as though you are the Chi entering the room. Does it feel open? Does it flow and feel free? Is the seating set up in a way that allows for an inviting feel where people want to hang and stay for a while? These are all good aims when supporting the Feng Shui of your living room.
Bring nature indoors with the windows reflecting outside….the energies and textures of elements help keep balance and harmony. Make sure that no energy is being blocked or overstuffed with items and furniture. When considering the intention of the room, which is unique & different for each family living there … place the items and arrange the furniture with the intention you are setting. In other words, if you want the room to be Yang and high energy use bright colors and place TV, Music and Games in this area. If the intention for the room is Yin and tranquil energy, place books and pillows with softer items and darker colors.

KITCHEN
The kitchen should be bright in color, Yellow which is Earth element, is one of my favorites. If building a kitchen in a new home that you are designing, we Practitioners prefer it to be located in the East, South East Sector of the home, direction wise. This way the hot afternoon sun doesn’t heat up your kitchen all day when it’s time to cook dinner. The Elements of Wood, Fire and Earth all create a working partnership. It’s best to keep the stove and the fridge apart if possible … as you can see in the sample picture here, for the Trine of the fridge, sink and oven. This would be ideal from a Feng Shui perspective so that the elements are not right next to each other. The stove, considered fire, and the fridge, considered water, should be separate if possible.
If this is not the case in your home … place a green object such as an area rug or plant in between the two with the intention of balance. The green colors work as a solution to mitigate the two elements of fire and water, who don’t get along, with both their friend, wood.
The kitchen is the heart of the home and where most people gather. If possible try not to have your back to the door when facing the stove. If this happens, a mirror over the stove to see behind you is best and also doubles your money by reflecting the burners.

DINING ROOM
Does this look like a Yang or Yin Dining room? It’s Yin 🎋
The darker colors and circular table & rug, gather people closer and create a more intimate setting.
Yes the colors are bright and might not be everyone’s taste but this makes for a nice, small dinner party environment where you can get to know each other better. Using the chandelier and an area rug to gather the Chi in one place around the dining room table. Area rugs are a great way to define a space for small or large living areas. By putting an area rug in each area of the home for example dining room living room etc. you get to create boundaries of space where there may not have been any especially for tile and wood flooring.
If you want to create a more Yang dining room you can use larger more rectangular tables with lighter, brighter wall colors. Open the space up to create a more celebratory, party atmosphere … if those are your intentions with the dining room.
Everyone is unique and different and their space should reflect those personalities as well as the rooms within that home.

BEDROOMS
Bedrooms are for rest and re-energizing your Chi after a long day, so these rooms are best suited to be as Yin and quiet as possible. If a TV has to be in the bedroom, use an Armoire with closed doors to hide it, or use other creative ideas for making it not predominate in the room, or the first thing you see when entering the room.
For the main bedroom, this is the place where relationships flourish, so keep romance and balance happening here the most. Make sure that both sides of the bed have matching/balanced nightstands and lamps, as well as a balanced amount of pillows or personal items on each side when possible. This creates balance between you and your mate and keeps the communication flowing to nurture the relationship.
If there is any work out equipment or home offices in your bedroom, get them out of the master bedroom when possible, or create a hidden area for them behind Sochi Screens, or choose a creative way to obscure from view. Not making these corrections or cures in the bedroom can create conflicts of interest between relationships and other things going on in your life. You can see this visually in the room when there are no boundaries.
Modern day homes have bigger and bigger main bedrooms, yet this can create Yang energy especially if you add mirrors, and high ceilings in over-sized rooms. If that is the case, Yin it up with darker paint tones and colors, more lamp/intimate lighting and creative ways to add romance and connection.
Mirrors should not be placed where they reflect the image of your body as you sleep. The thought behind this is, it can startle you in the night if you awake to see your image in the mirror, and it creates even more Yang energy where the Yin is needed. I have no mirrors in my bedroom; only the connecting bathroom where I make sure the door is closed at night when I sleep, and certainly the toilet lid is closed!!… You don’t want to mix the energy of the bathroom, which is wast discarded, with the revitalizing Chi that is working to restore your energy while you sleep.

HOME OFFICES
Home offices are getting more popular as more people tend to work from home these days. Make sure your back is not to the door of your home office. The best place you can have your back is to a command position wall, where you can see the window and the door from where you are seated and have your back to Mountain Energy, a wall. If that is not possible, hang a mirror on the far wall across from you, so that you know when people are approaching the door. If you are able to position your desk so you can see out your window, make sure that if there is a lot going on outside, that you are not easily distracted should you need to concentrate more on your work.
Keep clutter to a minimum, especially your desk at the end of each day. Make sure everything has its place, incorporating baskets and other items to help organize everything. If having your Home Office in your bedroom is the only place you can, then you must do a bit extra each day to really put away things that will cause you to work or think about work when you are trying to get rest.
