Happy Summer Solstice at exactly 3:57pm EST, June 21st in the Northern Hemisphere, and the Winter Solstice in the Southern Hemisphere. The June solstice marks the time at which the sun is directly above the Tropic of Cancer.
This will mark the furthest North the sun reaches throughout the year. Of course when looking at this energetically, this will be the longest day of sunlight in the Northern, and the shortest in the Southern Hemisphere.
According to the book, Making Ritual with Motherpeace Cards by Vicki Noble, “There is death in life, night in day, and always the yin is contained within the yang (and vice versa). There is a poignant quality to the long summer evenings, something bittersweet that pulls from under the high energy.

Ancient people in the southwestern United States who lived at Chaco Canyon placed giant rocks high on a mesa that caught a single ray of sun on the morning of Summer Solstice and brought it precisely down into a spiral they had carved on a rock. This ‘Sun Dagger’ (as archaeologists called it) went into the center of the spiral and out again, all in a course of a few minutes, creating an astronomical miracle.”
“At this time of year, the days are endless, our energies are abundant, and many of us feel invincible and ready for anything. For the children (and teachers) school is out, and it’s time to relax…summer generally brings a feeling of freedom and liberation that often begs to be expressed through our bodies.”

“Summer Solstice is expressed by the Lovers and the Chariot cards, Gemini and Cancer, the ‘urge to merge’ with all the stimuli in our environment, the myriad choices, and our ability to move into intentional action and activity on our own behalf. The Lovers depicts the conflicts of having more than one interest, and the need to make choices; the Chariot shows the development of the independent ego who can cope with its own independence.

Summer is like a Wheel of Fortune, with activities and rewards arriving after a year of hard work, as if someone had given the wheel a spin and everything we’d been working for had begun to take shape in our lives.”-excerpts from Making Ritual with Motherpeace cards by Vicki Noble.
As you take a walk or a hike or simply be in nature, on this sacred day… breathe in the energy and peace of the day. Take your shoes off and walk barefoot on the earth to receive her gift of grounding and balance.
